Prosecutors on Thursday demanded former TV personality Masashi Tashiro be sentenced to prison for four and a half years for using illegal drugs.

Tashiro, 48, bought illegal drugs from a foreign dealer around spring last year and used them with a woman he knew, prosecutors told the Tokyo District Court during a hearing of the case.

They added that Tashiro injected drugs into the woman at a hotel in Tokyo's Nakano-ku in September last year.

"He is obviously a habitual user of illegal drugs. Therefore, he should be confined for a long period," a prosecutor told the court.

Lawyers for Tashiro asked for a lenient ruling. "I plan to reflect on my past conduct and make efforts to improve myself," Tashiro said.

The court is set to rule on the case on Feb. 7. (Mainichi Shimbun, Japan, Jan. 27, 2005)
